ISSUE 139   |   SUMMER 2024

Walk on the Wild Side

FROM THE EDITOR

Treasure every moment!

Welcome to summer such as it is. It is very noticeable that our moods lift when the sun shines, so fingers crossed and let’s hope for more consistent warm weather soon.

In this issue, I have tried to elicit as much information as possible from the teams responsible for implementing the Masterplan. This includes the staff who are ensuring that the activities at the Club can carry on as ‘normally’ as possible, within the natural constraints that this massive project will impose. You can also read updates from David Paterson, Chair of the Masterplan Oversight Group, Laurence Croneen on ME&E, and Nick Taylor on F&B.

It is obvious that members are anxious to know that their individual interests are being protected and, from my discussions with our staff, it is clear that it will not be easy to please everyone all of the time. However, Laurence Croneen outlines some ideas for smaller events and, during the summer months at least, catering is being well taken care of. Our staff members are a huge asset to the Club, and it is heartening to see that there is always a concerted effort to make sure that every team helps each other out, particularly during the major summer events.

Following Jenny Montefiore’s report on her day with the Security Team, she has now turned her attention to Neil Harvey, Head of Grounds & Gardens, and his team, resulting in another fascinating article. Not content with that, she has written a very interesting update on Wildlife at the Club. Our Chair of Gardens and Landscape, Charles Craven, reports distressing news about the Plane trees on the river embankment. Wherever we turn there are always major works to be attended to and we cannot ignore the inevitable march of time.

Following Carrie Starren’s retirement, we are delighted to introduce you to our new Club Archivist, Clare Button. Her first article is about a very Hurlingham subject – Polo.

I cannot end without mentioning the sad news that Val Miller, who used to take some stunning photographs for the magazine, died in Canada at the end of April. Who can forget the sight of her lying prone in a flower bed to get that perfect shot, or her request to her subjects to tell us the colour of her knickers: ‘Green’ to get the right smile! She will be much missed.

Thanks once again to the editorial team for their dedicated hard work to produce this magazine.

Let’s treasure these happy summer days!
