CRICKET

Grass roots cricket

We have an exciting season ahead with forty-five senior, eight vets and six junior fixtures scheduled. In preparation, synthetic grass has been woven into the natural grass (see inset) to decrease the wear and tear of two of our wickets, very similar to what has been successfully done on the baseline of many of our tennis courts. We are also actively recruiting a new cricket coach in time for the start of the summer season.

In other news, work continues on developing an exciting new pavilion with a team that includes our architects, representatives from our Estates, Grounds and relevant Sports committees. It’s being designed to benefit many different users. It will be primarily for our cricketers, but also for croquet players, especially as shelter in winter, and for spectators. It can also be used for private member events, such as Young Hurlingham birthday parties, and for occasional community use. We hope to submit a pre-planning application to the Council with our preliminary designs very soon.

GOLF

Over for now

The all-too short, but immensely enjoyable, 2023/2024 season ended on Friday 8 March with the playing of the Rump Cup and Miller Salver Finals. This was followed by a buffet supper in the Terrace Room, attended by some 36 golfers. The seasons’ prizes were also presented as follows:

Rump Cup: Melville Guest (Runner up: John Deere)
Miller Salver: Tom Macfarlane (Runner up: Richard Kenwood)
Begg Coaster: (Ladies) Lally St Maur
Begg Coaster: (Gentlemen) Barry Campbell
Holes in One: Kathryn Bonnet, Richard Dalzell and Nick Hunter Jones
Chair (past and present) Prize: Gordon Young

During the season we played against the following clubs:
Home matches:
Roehampton: won by Roehampton
MCC: won by Hurlingham
Royal Mid-Surrey: won by Hurlingham

The one away match at Royal Mid-Surrey was an honourable draw.

On the committee front, Moira Penney has very kindly agreed to take over from
me at the end of next season, and Linda Gratton will also be joining the committee.

It just remains for me to wish all golf members a very rewarding summer of golf.
