BRIDGE
Exciting Events
Having been Chair of Bridge now for just over six months, I would like to personally thank my committee for all their hard work and support. Antonia Muir (Fixtures), Tony Bingham (Seminars), Claire Lean (Wednesday hosts), Charles Fisher (Thursday mornings), Alison Brunton (Quarterly Bridge Teams) and Jane Cartwright (Monday night social). Without them, our bridge community would not be thriving as it is, so a huge thank you to you all.
I am delighted to tell everyone of two exciting events coming up in September and October. On Monday 22 September, we are holding our first fundraising evening in aid of The Hurlingham Foundation. This is going to be an inclusive evening for all bridge players, as either duplicate or rubber bridge can be played. Please keep an eye out for the posters around the Club and then book your table of four.
Andrew Robson is returning to Hurlingham on Friday 24 October for a full day of teaching, learning and fun. It is always a treat to have Andrew at the Club, so please do book early to avoid disappointment. I have not been told of the topics as yet, but will let everyone know in my monthly Bridge newsletter.
On a final note, if you are an intermediate or advanced player, we would love to see you at our Victor Lesk’s duplicate evenings which take place on the first Monday of the month at 7pm. Please do come along, you will not be disappointed!
If you would like to sign up to receive my newsletters, please email Klaudia Szakal who is the Member Events Office in charge of Bridge: klaudia.szakal@hurlinghamclub.org.uk

Chess Circle
We have come to the end of a busy season, having played many cup and friendly matches against other London Clubs in the Hamilton Russell league. The final event was the Speed Chess at the RAC, with players having just five minutes each on the clock, necessitating quick play with intense concentration (see photo). Both the Cup Competition and the Speed Chess Event have resulted in wins for the MCC; Hurlingham unfortunately came last in both competitions as the other Clubs have got stronger, but there were a number of close games and good performances by our players. We have had young players of just eleven, twelve and thirteen years old playing for Hurlingham which is most encouraging. We have a full schedule of matches arranged for the next season starting in September.
The Chess Evenings on the first Thursday of each month in the Card Room have been well attended. We always welcome new players of any standard and regardless of age and hope some newcomers would like to play for Hurlingham. Please feel free to contact me for any further information if you are interested.
