Let's engage and connect

As we seek to make the Club a vibrant hub for all its members, the challenge of programming events that cater to our diverse community is both exciting and essential. The aim for this committee is to foster engagement, strengthen connections and create memorable experiences for everyone. I believe there is more we can do on all these counts, but especially in fostering engagement and strengthening connections, which are so important to the lifeblood of any community. Let me start by sharing just five ideas on what more we could do. And, by the way, this is not a list of proposals from me, but merely some ideas to stimulate greater dialogue between members and committee.

Themed Social Nights

Themed social nights can be a fun way to bring members together, immersed with a shared focus. For example, a ‘1950s Sock Hop’ or ‘Movie Themed Party’, which could feature relevant music, dancing, and themed refreshments. These types of events not only provide entertainment, but also facilitate socialising amongst members within and from different age groups.

Workshops and Skill-Sharing Sessions

Education is a powerful tool, and skill-sharing workshops can benefit our members immensely. Imagine sessions where experienced members teach various skills, from say, baking and photography to IT and DIY. This not only enriches our community but also empowers members to share their passions and knowledge. Given the age range in the Club, learning opportunities can cater to both younger individuals looking to enhance their skill set and older members keen on sharing lifelong hobbies, and with some skills (like IT), where the teacher-pupil role is reversed!

Health and Wellness Programmes

With increasing awareness around mental and physical health, organising wellness programmes can greatly benefit our members. This might include meditation sessions or workshops on nutrition and wellness. We could also have a series of engaging speakers focusing on health topics relevant to all age ranges. And, incorporating outdoor activities like guided nature walks, suitable for all ages, can promote an active lifestyle while building camaraderie amongst members.

Creative Arts Fair

This could be a wonderful way to showcase the creative talents of members from across the whole range of performing, visual and literary arts within the Club. Members could display works of art, sculpture, photography, craft, fashion, design and media. They could play musical instruments, read extracts of prose and poetry, dance, sing, stand-upand entertain, individually or in groups. This event would enable members to connect through creativity and provide a platform for self-expression across all age groups. The Hurlingham Players and Art could take a leading role in such an event.

The Hurlingham Club Foundation

Using the Foundation more to integrate community service into our programming can create a profound sense of purpose and belonging. Organising volunteer days or charitable fundraisers not only supports local causes but also unites members through shared altruistic goals. Partnering with local organisations to address community needs, helps members feel connected to both each other and the broader community. Some of this is already happening but we can do more.

Offering a diverse array of events is key to engaging our Club’s wideranging members. These initiatives are examples of not only catering to varying tastes but also enhancing our connections and enriching the overall Club experience. Let’s come together to transform our collective vision into reality and make the Club a place where everyone feels welcome and cherished. And, oh yes, in case you haven’t heard, our new title is simply and clearly Member Events! I look forward to hearing from you with many more thoughts and ideas.
